Infertility is a modern-day menace. Urologists at MGS Hospital show a ray of hope to childless couples

We have often heard, “Children are the only future the human race has.”But with infertility creeping in every nook of India, the future doesn’t seem so bright.

“Infertility among Indian couples seems to be on a perpetual rise”, points out Dr. Prashant Jain, an andrologist and sexual health expert from MGS Super Speciality Hospital (Delhi). He explains, “In medical terms, infertility is the biological failure to conceive a child (in women) or the inability to contribute to conception (in men) even after consistent, unprotected sexual intercourse for a period of 12 months or more.”
It is important to note that contrary to popular belief, the problem is not just confined to women. Sad but true, infertility is surfacing on an exponential rate in our country and is impacting men as well, both in rural and urban areas.

Dr. Prashant Jain, an andrologist from the sexual health expert panel at MGS Hospital throws light on the alarming fact that more than 40% of infertility cases are a result of reproductive frailties in both the partners. He also adds, “It is indeed disturbing that around 60% of the couples who seek medical help for childlessness at MGS Hospital are in their prime reproductive age.”

There could be a number of factors that may lead to infertility in an individual. The most common causes of infertility in women are the impairment of fallopian tubes, endometriosis, ahormone condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a previous miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, or conditions affecting ovulation and the uterus. In men, infertility could be a result of low sperm count and motility, poor sperm quality, morphology abnormalities, inflammation of testes, or problems related to erection or ejaculation.

Other than these, there are certain health issues or lifestyle habitsthat may result in impotence or the inability to bear a child. These may include genetic problems, sexually transmittedinfections, obesity, diabetes, lack of physical exercise, nutritional deficiencies, smoking, pollution, substance abuse, steroids, stress, and so on. Delaying pregnancy or not planning a child during the biologically-fertile age may also increase the risk of childlessness in many couples.

The andrologist and sexual health expert suggests semen analysis or a chlamydia test, apart from the general physical exam, blood test and ultra sound to detect the cause of infertility in men. A woman may have to undergo a thorough gynaecological examination, hysterosalpingography (HSG), ovarian reserve testing, laparoscopy, pelvic ultrasound, or thyroid function test for detailed, accurate diagnosis of the condition.

According to Dr. Prashant Jain, an andrologist and sexual health expert at MGS Super Speciality Hospital, infertility not only impedes the expansion of the family but also destroys an individual’s self-esteem and social life. This could further lead to a complex mental turmoil that may result in severe depression, anxiety, or suicidal tendencies.

Dr. Prashant Jain, an andrologist and sexual health expert from MGS Hospital mentions, “Infertility, in both men and women, is treatable.” Experts may suggest fertility treatments to cure erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation, retrograde ejaculation, epididymal blockage, etc., in men. Women may be prescribed certain drugs to cure ovulation disorders, or could be suggested a fallopian tube or laparoscopic surgery depending on the diagnosis. Certain methods of assisted conception may also fetch effective results. These may include IUI (intrauterine insemination), IVF (in vitro fertilization), or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection).

“Remember, internal conflicts and friction may hinder the fertility treatment process. Unwavering physical, mental and emotional harmony between both the partners could result in effective, timely treatment of infertility,” counsel Dr. Prashant Jain, an andrologist and sexual health expert at MGS Hospital.

But even miracles take a little time. Optimism and persistence, along with right medical intervention, can help you regain the lost vitality and experience the ultimate joy of parenthood.

There are different departments for every health issue so you do not have to run around looking for doctors and wondering whom to consult. Also, high level of cleanliness and hygiene is always maintained, which is very important because people are always scared of catching infections.
